Correspondence, a report, an invitation, and a set of instructions related to the naval career of Gillis (1883-1907?, 1934). Includes a letter from M.B. Williams, New Jersey lawyer, to Gillis when he was a boy presenting a model ship as a Christmas gift to the young "Admiral" in 1883 when Gillis apparently lived in New York State; a letter, dated 1934, written by Gillis describing Williams' letter; a report on ship signaling prepared by officers of the battle ship "Texas" (1896); undated instructions for the care of "double bottoms"; a note confirming receipt of 1,000 yen sent by Gillis (1905); and an invitation to the unveiling of a statue (1907).
